2P2: Revisted

Or: A Boy Raised by (Stuffed) Wolves
a kate west revisit
(original review here)

As a child, Bill Olson believed everything around him was alive, with actual feelings. Especially his stuffed animals (to let you in on a little secret: HE STILL BELIEVES THIS.) More on this later.

Bill grew up (if you can really call it that) to be an actor, a juggler, a teacher of the Alexander Technique and a puppeteer with Lunatique Fantastique. He likes to say he misspent his adulthood with decades of acting, directing, writing and producing. But it paid off (another little secret: NOT WITH MONEY - do you see where this is going?)
Bill did what anyone would do (right?) and put his imagination on film (this is the later part).

Enter the stuffed animals. Again. Proving the world is big enough for any type of imagination. Influenced by Jim Henson and Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes, Bill found the perfect outlet for his artistic bent by forming Two Plush Two Productions (2P2). What is it? According to 2P2’s Mission Statement, it is "a video production team founded to create quality entertainment for everyone through a unique form of storytelling; presenting the world as it should be, through the eyes of stuffed animals."

How does this work? Essentially, he and his crew manipulate stuffed animals on camera into simple stories, set to different soundtracks. And just so we’re clear, it’s important to see the hand manipulation, because we need to see the blend of fantasy and reality. Remember playing with stuffed animals as a kid? It's like that, but more poignant. And funnier. And on video.

And infectious. Because Two Plush Two (2P2) is increasingly getting requests for videos. Chris Ballew, lead singer of The Presidents of the United States of America, was so excited by the video “More Bad Times”, which interpreted the Presidents' song, that he asked 2P2 to do a video for a children's song he recorded as Caspar Babypants. He says he was struck by an excellently done slow motion shot in one of the earlier videos so he commissioned 2P2 to do “Baby’s Getting Up” (later followed by "The Frogs"). This success was followed by a request from Seattle musician Jonathan Shue to illustrate his lovely lyrical ballad, “Bartholomew”, that celebrates following dreams. He had so much fun with 2P2 that he wrote his own version of "Deck the Halls" for the stuffed animals to act out. Musicians seem to love the way 2P2 interprets their themes and images.

In fact, these “critter” stories really do speak to everyone. From the classic tortoise and the hare tale, to beloved toys missing their owner (she’s off at college), it’s riveting storytelling. And it really is a unique point of view. To give you a small example, in one scene, the animals want to mail a letter, but don’t know how. They get the concept of mail, just not how it’s delivered. Their solution is adorably touching.  Oh and by the way, only one of them actually talks. That would be C.C. the black cat and unofficial spokesperson for 2P2 (watch him at a recent red carpet event here). Nothing will change Bill’s mind about this.

See for yourself in this exclusive Kate West interview:
Bill never lets go of this magic. That’s what makes it work, and makes everyone around him believe it too. Which is why the “critters” seem so real. They feel acutely and get the message of the story across in a fun and direct way. Its gentle Henson-like humor is never mean, and usually quite sweet. The greatest appeal is the way the "critters" deal with challenges - their creativity and teamwork present an idealized version of humanity. It’s obvious the 2P2 crew love what they are doing too. Bill and his human cast often share “Eureka” moments on set, which he generally voices with a pleased yelp, to the great amusement of his fellow plush fans.

The other reason it works is because we want to let our guards down a little and pretend again for a little while. To see the world from a younger, more innocent place. That’s definitely worth paying attention to. Plus (plush) it's pretty dang cute.

Thanks listening. And watching, if you’re inclined. Links to all below.

Two Plush Two Productions

a kate west recommendation

We're still in a recession, still at war, still escaping tsunamis and still enduring reality t.v. And yet we can take a small breather from all of that to watch Two Plush Two Productions videos featuring stuffed animals enacting short stories to cool music. In fact, we should. It's light, it's fun and it's cute. And it makes you smile. And like the work of the late Jim Henson (Muppets), none of it is ever mean-spirited. Good for the whole family.

Bunnies, cats, bears, monkeys and even unicorns bust some moves on camera, in emotional farewells to friends, cuddling with loved ones and even some getting in some holiday decorating. Manipulated by human arms (the "puppeteers"), the animals show remarkable feeling and convey perfectly soulful vignettes. From classic tales like "The Tortoise and the Hare" to simulated musical videos, the cast members demonstrate delightfully furry versatility.

What's really remarkable is that something so simple can be so enthralling. Didn't we all do this as kids - make our stuffed animals perform for a captive audience (usually our parents)? The cleverness isn't at all self-deprecating or mocking as in so much of comedy today. It's sincere. And just ... happy. And what's wrong with that? We all need more playtime, especially the older we get.

Oh and they count The Presidents of the United States of America among their fans (click here). So bring along your inner child and please spread the joy (see below).

Jonathan Shue - In The Valley of Heart's Delight

a kate west review

Local San Francisco artist Jonathan Shue knows his way around a guitar. And some compelling lyrics. With the album "In The Valley of Heart's Delight", he serenades us on relationship woes (to name one recurring theme), spun to lovely strumming on his guitar (and the occasional harmonica).

The songs here are definitely universally relatable and pretty enough to keep you listening. "Honesty Gets Me In Trouble" in particular, captures an amusing take on why some guys can't help saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. "Ballad of Rene Vallaincourt" adds some western mystique, with a tang of tolerable country. Echoes of folk music drift in and out of some of his work too, in the nicest way possible.

The best piece, however, is the softly subtle "Bartholomew", about the musings of a dreamer. Because it is so brimming with visual possibilities, Shue commissioned a local production company Two Plush Two (who also know their way around a good story), to showcase one of their adorably popular videos featuring "Bartholomew" (separate review here). The resulting collaboration is sweetly wistful and perfectly executed. Catch the magic below. And remember to pass on the good feelings!

Scarecrow Video - a Seattle Experience

a kate west recommendation

Having recently visited Seattle for the first time, I was struck by how right so many of my friends were. This was a perfect city for me - laid-back, liberal, intellectual, but not snobbish, and environmentally savvy. Everyone was friendly, with no agenda. Coming from Los Angeles, you can imagine my relief not to hear an itemized list of someone's resume every time I merely said hello. The air was clear, the weather gorgeous (though I was warned time and time again how utterly atypical this was and not to get used to that bright sun) and little wisps of cotton blew across every road, like leftover pixie dust. Truly magical. Too good to be true, right?

I did all the must-sees like Pike Place and the Space Needle. Even visited the architecturally innovative newish Library. Saw surrounding little versions of Pleasantville like Kirkland, Bellevue and Ballard. All worthy tourist photo opps, to be sure. But my favorite spot in Seattle has to be Scarecrow Video.

The staff here lives, breathes and eats cinema, pretty much. The store has the most extensive film collection I've ever seen and puts Hollywood Boulevard to shame. Every recommendation is dead-on and they expect you to know your film history as well, since most movies are categorized by director. Who needs Netflix when you can walk in to the very real and present warm atmosphere of your fellow cinephiles? It'll take you years to learn everything about the place, so start by chatting up the staff - most of whom are here for the long haul. Then come back to La-la Land and tell 'em what they're missing.

If you're going, here are the jots of noteworthy interest:

We’re located in the University District of Seattle at 5030 Roosevelt Way NE (206.524.8554).

A quick exit off of I-5 and an easy walk from the University of Washington.

For directions to the store or how long it will take you to walk here from Boston, click here.

My Roommate the Cylon

a kate west recommendation in abbreviations

Ever hear of "My Roommate, the Cylon" (MRTC)? Even if you aren't a fan of BSG ("Battlestar Galactica", c'mon people, turn on your television once in a while, OMG) and I'm really not, though I've heard of it of course, this series parody will tickle you. Three normal guys in a normal apartment suddenly suspect that one of them isn't so normal after all. One of them might be ... a cylon. And if don't know what that is, stop right here, as you're obviously not a BSG fan. To find out which one is in the closet, tune in each week as we get closer and closer to the hilarious truth. Well edited, directed, acted and just generally put together in a perfectly seriously funny way, MRTC should not be missed. Especially by sci-fi die hards. But even the non-techies will get a boost. As the byline says ....

Three roommates.

One is a Cylon.

You do the math.

Eat, Pray, Love and Think for Yourself

a kate west reflection

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the sensational autobiography "Eat, Pray, Love", is spreading the gospel of self and creative genius. She's good at this, having written a compelling account of her own spiritual awareness. So she's the perfect person to lecture people on how to find and nurture creativity. I don't have a problem with this or with her but I am annoyed by the mindlessness of some of her fans.

As parodied in Monty Python's brilliant "Life of Brian", the Messiah never said anything funny or anything you can poke fun at and Python never did. What they made fun of was the unthinking masses who refused to think for themselves, despite poor Brian's pleading. He didn't ask to be a leader - it was thrust upon him.

Gilbert, while certainly no Messiah, didn't ask either. She just wanted to tell her story and then after months of enjoying the bestseller list, she now has to deal with rabid fans following in her literal footsteps, so to speak. Confessing on "Oprah" that they went to all the same spots and met all the same people as in the book, these women glow with the satisfaction of having achieved some sort of enlightenment. But they haven't. They didn't find their own path - they followed Gilbert's. Maddening. Live your own story and then you can write about it - don't steal someone else's.

That being said, the video below really is a fascinating and appealing way to look at creativity. Just please, find your own genie.

James Adomian

Impersonator Extraordinaire
a kate west recommendation

James Adomian is a brilliant young comic who does THE best impersonation of George W I've ever seen. Granted I haven't seen every GW impersonator, but I am fairly confident Adomian is way up there. You heard it here.

Not only does he capture the mannerisms, but he has the pathology of speech down pat. He's an accomplished mimic, a well-trained improviser and not a bad actor to boot. Trained at the world-famous Groundlings (www.groundlings.com), I doubt there is anything he can't do.

See for yourself. You can catch him on any number of late night shows, including Craig Ferguson and of course YouTube. Look him up on IMDB (and note the prominent "Harold and Kumar" credit)!

a kate west reflection

"Quarterlife" is the latest offering by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick (of the poignantly talky shows "thirtysomething", "Once and Again" and "My So-Called Life"). But rather than premiere it on television, they're taking the modern route by posting it on the Internet and more specifically, everyone's main source of networking, MySpace.com. A natural incarnation of the blog frenzy among our youth, "Quarterlife" depicts the angst we all experienced fresh out of college, when we were liberally over-educated but working in a coffee shop. It should speak volumes to anyone of a certain generation.

As in their other projects, Herskovitz/Zwick gives us lots of dialogue, little action and mucho reflection. It can be a little boring (and certainly whiny) in parts, although you may also find it hits all too close to home. To paraphrase cast member Laura Carson, "Quarterlife is the twenty-something's identity crisis. In other words, Life."

Cliff Todd Sings
a kate west favorite

Cliff Todd is a phenomenal local singer who just happens to do a spectacular Frank Sinatra and an uncanny Bobby Darin. He's sung just about everywhere, including local musicals, rave parties and karaoke bars, gaining him a pretty fabulous local cult following here in L.A., and rightly so! He's got the smooth mannerisms and suave moves of many of the famous Rat Packers and can dazzle crowds with even more fun impersonations. Remember, you saw him here first. If only we could go back in time and place him at the old Sands Hotel. Ah well, he'll just have to find another smashing way to take Vegas by storm. Be sure to keep an eye out.

Catch him on My Space: http://www.myspace.com/clifftodd and then compare for yourself (below). As always, Cliff does it his way, so come fly with him now, before he gets too booked up.

Planet Unicorn

"In the year 2117, an 8 year old gay boy named Shannon found a magic lamp. He was granted three wishes. The first, a fur jacket. The second, a flying car. The third, a planet full of unicorns. This is the story of that planet." [spoken] "A gay boy wished for a planet full of unicorns, planet unicorn, unicorn planet. Give it up for Feathers, oooh Cadillac, and Tom Cruise. Ohhh, planet unicorn, heyyy!" [sung]

So begins the hottest new video site online, featured on both NPR and in August's issue of TIME OUT, "Planet Unicorn". As the song above says, it's all about a planet full of unicorns (dig those crazy names too), wished into existence by an 8-year-old gay boy named Shannon. The fact that it appeals to children and adult alike is testament to the cleverness of its creators Mike Rose and Tyler Spiers, talented young comedic actors in Los Angeles. Now internationally known, the website has well over a million hits and has become a pop culture phenomenon. Thank you, You Tube!

It's pink, quirky, harmless fun, with childlike animation and simple dialogue. And it all works really well. Check it out now, and you too can be cooler than My Space.

The Inheritance

The Inheritance
a kate west favorite

"The Inheritance" is an odd little piece of artistry filmed on good old-fashioned Super 8. Silent, subtitled and with a dramatic Prokofiev score, it doesn't seem like the type of thing that would capture mainstream hearts, but it gets under your skin and won't leave. It's weirdly brilliant, darkly different and quite riveting. Ariel Gregory is the director, writer and creator and his sensitive perception of adventure and story is wonderfully stark and clear.

Basically, a Pirate Captain hands over a black inheritance to a hapless wench. The imagery in between all that is eerie and fantastic and well worth several viewings. A kind of bizarre insanity. In order not to give away any more, you'll just have to see for yourself. Don't worry, there'll be enough blood for everyone.

Les Luthiers Volumen 3" (1973)

The Argentinean comedic group Les Luthiers was formed in the 1960's and is composed of several articulately funny gentleman who are versed in literature and music alike. Following up a clever monologue with a musical number, they've been internationally famous for years and have several popular YouTube videos to show for it.

Known for using hand made instruments (made from everyday objects), their name comes from the French word "luthiers". Appropriately, Les Luthiers integrates cantatas, serenatas, madrigals, pop and opera into their act. Intellectually provocative, there is something for everyone, from rap to word play. Often ending in playful silliness, they evoke Python (Monty) like absurdity so it is no wonder they have worldly appeal.

  • Ernesto Acher (left the group 1986): Piano, horn, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, drums, keyboards, cello, vocals, etc.

David Blaine appears to trick two unsuspecting bystanders by seemingly knowing more about them than they know themselves. On closer look, we realize it's a parody, and a damn good one, thanks to Groundlings company members Mitch Silpa, Mikey Day (MTV's "Wild-n'Out") and Michael Naughton.
